Mrs. Berisha
 
Liri Berisha was born in Tirana, on July 5, 1948 to Rexhep and Milica Ramaj.

After successfully completing elementary and high school, she continues her studies in the Faculty of Medicine at Tirana University, where she graduated in 1971. This year also marks her marriage to Sali Berisha, one of the well-known doctors of that time. They have two children Argita and Shkelzen and are grandparents to Sara, Dalila, Amla, Arti, Medina and Lajdon.

In addition to her diligent work as a doctor, she is also known as a devoted wife, especially in the late '90s, at which time her husband Sali Berisha publicly engaged and played primary role in the collapse of the communist dictatorship in Albania .

Complete victory of democracy in Albania in 1992 and the election of Mr. Sali Berisha as the President of the Republic, brought public engagements for Mrs. Liri Berisha. She is the first "First Lady"  in the history of the Democratic Albania during 1992-1997, a time when she was distinguished for her involvement in the public life and commitment to people in need.

Dr. Liri Berisha is president of the Albanian Children Foundation "Domenick Scaglione, whose spotlight are children who suffer from blood pressure problems, cancer and children with special needs. As a pediatrician for 30 years, she has fought to reduce infantile mortality. Under her direction, the “Domenick Scaglione” Foundation cooperates with international medical centers and foundations for children, mainly dealing with Thalassemia, autism or other illnesses.

Mrs. Berisha gives her constant personal contribution towards targeting autism, by organizing for years in a row National and International Conferences on Autism with the participation of many well-known local and international professors. Mrs. Berisha participates every year at the annual meeting "The World Focus on Autism" under the auspices of Mrs. Ban soon-Teak, organized by Autism Speaks in New York. The establishment of a center for the treatment of autism "Fly for Life" under the auspices of Mrs. Berisha and the Albanian Children Foundation is an important milestone and sends a very optimistic message for the whole community of Albanian children and families who suffer disorders of autism.

A continuous commitment is related to the Thalassemia, disease. Apart from lobbying with the government in support of this community, Mrs. Berisha’s engagement becomes present in awareness raising campaigns on voluntary blood donation to transform it in a general culture for the entire Albanian society. Under the auspices of Mrs. Christofia Elsie, First Lady of Cyprus, Mrs. Berisha is also one of the founders of the "Group of prominent personalities" for global awareness to hemoglobin’s disorders. Mrs. Berisha is Honorary President of the UNICEF office in Albania and the spokesperson for efforts towards marginalized children's education and concrete improvement in care and early childhood development, education of women and the fight against trafficking of children.

Mrs. Liri Berisha is also a board member of International Association of Oncologists and Gastroenterologists. This association has honored Mrs Berisha with the Diploma of Honor on medicine without borders and helping children.

Dr. Berisha was appointed Local Ambassador to Albania and Kosovo, for global initiative of UNICEF, on the Elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus in the Central African Republic.

During her daily activities, Mrs. Berisha is active in awareness campaigns such as anti-poverty campaign organized by the FAO (Food Agriculture Organization), Rome, Italy, Campaign for Family Planning "For moments of happiness" organized by USAID on the World Health Day and the campaign " We promote inclusion - equal opportunities for people with disabilities, organized by the British Council and British embassy in Tirana.

The prestigious organization WIN (Women's Information Network) in Washington DC has awarded Mrs. Liri Berisha in 2009 with the title “Woman of the Year” with the motivation "for her commitment to make the world a better place for women and all citizens."

Mrs. Liri Berisha was honored with the title "symbol of human values" by the National Institute of Integration of the Albanian Orphans on the occasion of 90th anniversary of the founding of the First Orphanage shelter.

Throughout her  public life Mrs.. Liri Berisha has played a major role in the emancipation of Albanian society and in promoting participation of women and girls in public life, as well. She is active and gives her valuable contribution in the assessment of the qualities and attributes of Albanian women and girls.

In 2008, she establishes the Cultural Foundation "Mother Teresa", which aims at the commemoration of Mother Teresa's image and promotion of human values that it globally represents, regardless of religious affiliations. As founder of the Foundation, Mrs. Liri Berisha has played a key role in the initiative for setting up in Tirana, a memorial to honor the image of Mother Teresa, who will serve as a place where ideas and projects will enliven in the spirit of humanity and commitment to people in need and the weak.

Marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mother Teresa, this year takes on a special importance for Mrs. Liri Berisha and "Mother Teresa” Cultural Foundation’s activity. Recently she has made several visits to the U.S., and on 28 April 2010, she will host a reception and exhibition at the premises of Capitol Hill, to honor the great activity of Mother Teresa.

Marking the 100th birth anniversary of Mother Teresa, this year takes on a special significance for Mrs. Liri Berisha’s activity and "Mother Teresa" Cultural Foundation. During this time Mrs. Berisha has made several visits in the USA where during 25-28 April 2010 has made the opening of two exhibitions in the United States, in New York in the premises of the United Nations Organization and in Washington DC in Capitol Hill. These exhibitions were successfully completed and conveyed to the visitors the culture, traditions and valuable values of the Albanian humanist Mother Teresa.

On 8 May 2010, The Municipal Council of City of Lushnja gives to Mrs. Liri Berisha the title "Honorary Citizen of the City of Lushnja" with the motivation "For Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Health for Special and Particular Care and Help for Children Suffering from Thalassemia”.

As a result of several years of work as head of the Albanian Children Foundation, in November 2011, Mrs. Berisha makes possible one of the most ambitious initiatives of this foundation, the establishment of the Regional Center for Autism, the biggest in Balkan, which will help children affected by autism spectrum disorder and their families.  The finalization of this commitment, paves the way to research and scientific work that this center will undertake in the field of autism treatment in Albania, a country with huge necessities toward this. The invaluable contribution toward the designing of a National Strategy for Autism in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Autism Speaks, has made possible that the work of Mrs. Berisha as head of this foundation to be considered by world dignitaries as a success model and development in the region that must have this part of the globe.
 
The serious several years of commitment of Mrs. Berisha toward sick children and families in need, was appraised in December 2011 by Lombardy Region in Italy. The echo of her continuous humanitarian, scientific and social involvement towards people in need, with a special support toward women and children affected by health problems and adverse economic conditions, honored Mrs. Berisha with the "Peace Prize 2011" by the President of Lombardy Region, Roberto Formigoni.
Under the patronage of Mrs. Berisha was established the Diplomatic Club in October 2011, which through different organized activities promotes the Albanian tradition and culture, the hospitality of Albanian people.
